Lesson 1- Why is the Feast Important? An introduction to the Potlatch Ban
At Nusdeh Yoh we usually host 3 Learning Feast a year. This gives our students an introduction to the Feasting/Potlatch/Bahlats system and a chance to experience a Feast if they have not had the opportunity to attend one before. Our Nusdeh Yoh Feast is a Multi-Nation Feast, which means that it takes protocols from different Nations and combines them into one Feast experience. This is because we want to teach and learn about the Feasting protocols in many Nations, while still honouring the protocols of the Lheidli T'enneh Nation, on whose lands we live and teach.
Below is an embedded copy of the PowerPoint which I would normally teach to the class. Please feel free to make your way through the PowerPoint as you see fit. Usually there is videos in the PowerPoint, but I can not upload the PowerPoint with the videos so I will embed them directly onto this site.
The resources on this site are to support the Nusdeh Yoh Learning Feast Home Learning Edition package that was sent home.
Gifts from Raven
Here is a reading of the book Gifts from Raven, which is included in the take home package for the Learning Feast. It is not included in the PowerPoint above, but it is a good resource for our little ones.
Lesson 2: Many Nations Feast and Protocols
In Lesson two we will learn about a little about the difference between Many-Nations Feasts and a Feast/Potlatch/Bahtlas held by one Nation. The PowerPoint below also gives you a brief introduction to each Nation from which we borrow protocols that we will be using in our Feast. Below are some videos on Potlatches that I was able to find on YouTube. The take home package has different excerpts from Cheryl's Potlatch and Gifts from Raven. If you like you can re-watch the videos above for the full story.
